AI Cartoon Interviews: The Future of Job Hunting

Jun 17, 2024

As if job hunting wasn’t challenging enough, candidates are now being interviewed by AI-powered cartoon characters capable of evaluating infinite candidates.

Imagine being greeted onscreen by a cartoon interviewer, resembling a youthful Harry Potter with dark hair and glasses. This AI character, named Alex, is one of several options that include various genders and races, with names like Benjamin, Leslie, and Kristin. During the interview, Alex asks about your professional experience, theoretical questions about programming, and even provides a coding exercise.

Developed by micro1, a US-based AI recruitment engine for engineers, this technology aims to offer an “enjoyable, gamified, and less-biased interview process,” according to the company’s founder, Ali Ansari, in a demo video.

The use of AI tools in job hunting is becoming increasingly common. Platforms like Indeed and LinkedIn have incorporated generative AI tools for both job seekers and recruiters. AI interviewer chatbots can conduct interviews, while other AI tools help candidates practice for job interviews. However, the effectiveness and fairness of AI in evaluating candidates are still debated. Some AI-driven HR tools have been criticized for biases, such as discriminating against applicants with Black-sounding names, favoring male candidates, or overlooking those with employment gaps.

While AI tools in hiring can save companies time and money, the long-term implications for job seekers remain uncertain.
