Adele has revealed she’s been forced to postpone the next dates of her Las Vegas residency after illness ‘took a toll on her voice.’
Days after revealing she’d been placed on vocal rest, the singer, 35, shared the sad news that all 10 of her March shows would be pushed back to a later date after being ordered to rest on ‘doctors orders.’
Adele is due to wrap up her Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in June, and is thought to be earning around £1.5 million per show.
It is not the first time that the singer has been forced to cancel shows due to health issues, with a painful spinal condition and throat surgery causing her to postpone other dates in the past.
Here, MailOnline takes a look at her previous health battles and how they have impacted her career.
Throat surgery forces her to cancel shows in 2011
Adele encountered her first major health issue that would impact her career back in 2011, when she was forced to undergo ‘vocal cord microsurgery’ to remove a benign polyp that forced her to cancel a series of gigs.
Aged 23 at the time, Adele underwent the operation per a statement from the Massachusetts General Hospital in the American city of Boston.
‘Based on the advice of her doctor and voice therapist in the United Kingdom, Adele came to Boston to consult and undergo corrective voice surgery,’ the statement read.
This type of surgery is designed to preventing repeated bleeding of the vocal cords. and came less than a month after the singer cancelled the remainder of dates she was scheduled to perform that year.
Posting on Instagram at the time, Adele said: ‘If I continue to pick up everything before I have properly conquered these problems and nipped them in the bud, I will be totally and utterly f****d,’ she explained on her blog last month.
‘Singing is literally my life, it’s my hobby, my love, my freedom and now my job.’
Singer left ‘devastated’ after cancelling final two shows of 2017 tour
Disaster struck for the singer once again in 2017, when she was forced to cancel the final two shows of her European tour.
She was due to play at Wembley Stadium for homecoming shows in London, but had to withdraw after revealing that she had damaged her vocal cords again in an emotional post on Facebook.
She wrote: ‘On medical advice I simply am unable to perform over the weekend’.
‘To say I’m heartbroken would be a complete understatement.’
Adele later revealed that she had inserted copies of a handwritten note into the tour program for the first two nights of her Wembley show.
In a letter posted on the star’s official social media channels, she admitted to being ‘so desperate’ to finish her tour that she had ‘even considered miming’ so that the shows could have taken place.
Adele promised fans that they would be given first priority on her next tour, but unlucky ticket-holders are still waiting.
Sciatica symptoms left Adele unable to walk
In August 2023, Adele revealed to fans that she collapsed backstage before a performance due to a sciatica attack, according to The Sun.
She allegedly told fans: ‘They picked my whole body up off the floor.’
Adele also was forced to sit down during her Weekends With Adele performance, explaining: ‘I am going to sit down and rest my sciatica.’
Per the NHS, sciatica is ‘where the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back to your feet, is irritated or compressed’.
It can cause shooting pains, a sensation of cramp and can be so severe it leaves someone unable to walk.
Earlier this year Adele detailed her chronic back pain during another Las Vegas show as she hobbled across the stage.
While talking to the crowd, she fired t-shirts towards members of the audience using a handheld cannon, and saying: ‘I’ve got two more, I’ve just got to get over to the other side of the stage.
‘I have to waddle these days because I have really bad sciatica,’ Adele added in the video obtained by the Daily Star.
Adele has previously discussed being in pain for ‘half her life’, prior to losing weight and how her body overhaul has helped her cope with her problems.
